Two residents of Waini, Region One, who were accused of being thieves of a boat and engine, were yesterday arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, charged with robbery with violence.
Levi Boyer, 21, and Aadion Boyer, 24, both denied the allegation that on July 31, at Regent Boat House Mabaruma, North West District, they robbed Jonathan Hutson of a boat along with a Yamaha engine to the value of $4.2M. It was also alleged that the men made use of personal violence before, during or after the robbery.
They were remanded to prison until August 17, and will be making their next court appearance at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
Attorney Peter Hugh made a compelling bail application on behalf of the men. He argued that his clients should be released on reasonable bail because the alleged stolen articles were not found in their possession.
Hugh contended that the defendants have no prior or pending matters. He added that the defendants are not flight risks and have permanent addresses at Waini, Region One.
However, his bail application did not stand without objection from Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones. In objecting to bail, Jones pointed out that the defendants provided the police with different addresses while in custody.
He said that Levi Boyer told the police he resides at St. John’s Village while Aadion Boyer had told them he resides at Three Brothers’ Village.
On the contrary, the attorney intervened and informed the court that both villages are located in Waini. He also said that the communities have no lot numbers.
But even though the lawyer provided an explanation for the issues arising with the addresses, Prosecutor Jones maintained his objection. He highlighted the gravity of the offence and also the amount of money involved. Jones also told the court that the boat was recovered and that the defendants were positively identified by the victim, who was not present for the court hearing.
