The touring Harvard Cricket Academy under-17 cricket team of Trinidad & Tobago began a one-week tour to Guyana with a 33-run defeat at the hands of their counterparts from Everest on a sluggish Everest track and heavy outfield
yesterday.
In a game was contested under blue skies in sweltering heat, the Trinidadian institution which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and produced Trinidad’s most gifted cricketer, batting Maestro Brian Charles Lara, slipped from 69-1 to 157 all out in 29 overs in reply to 183-5 off their allotted 30 overs made by Everest.
The camp Road team lost Rajendra Danraj (6) with seven runs on the board but talented 12-year-old opener Yeudister Persaud and Captain Azad Mohamed (13) put together 58 for the second wicket before pacer Kylon Jacobs removed the left-handed Mohamed.
It was soon 84-3 when Raj Sookdeo (1) departed off left arm spinner Sanjay Browne (2-34) who also removed the pint sized Persaud for a well played 29 with three fours to leave the home team 104-4 in the 22nd over.
The elder Sookdeo, who hit five fours and a six in his unbeaten 57 and Hardat Singh (9) added 42 for the fifth wicket before he fell to Skipper Keon Mason at 151-5. Brian Jagmohan (10*) joined Gavin Sookdeo and batted positively as the 10 overs produced 81 runs.
When the teenagers from Carnival Country began their chase, Tristan Jackman (9) and the bespectacled Akeem Sookram, who looked very strong off his pads, give their team a solid 36-run opening stand before Jagmohan trapped Jackman LBW.
After Sookoo departed, the visitors slumped from 69-1 to 157 all out despite a pugnacious 44 decorated with four fours and a huge six by Andel Nicholas who was removed by Gavin Sookdeo at 151-9 but his cameo knock was too little too late to make an impact on the match.
Sookdeo finished with 3-51 and Vishal Persaud captured 3-27 while another Everest under-13 player, left-arm pacer Brandon Ramnarine looked impressive with the new ball.
Today the tourists will face-off with the Albion U-17s at the Albion ground in Berbice as they aim to change their fortunes.
