The gunman who was shot dead following a shootout with law enforcement officers on Wednesday died from shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot injuries. The shooting occurred in the vicinity of the No. 63 Beach
Meanwhile residents are commending the police for acting swiftly after they confronted three bandits and shot one of them dead.
Delroy Cort called ‘Gray’, male Negro, 23, of Lot 14 Manchester Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was shot after a confrontation with the police.
Law enforcement officers had responded to a robbery under arms report that occurred in the vicinity of No. 61 Village and No. 63 Village beaches.
According to information, around 13:35 hrs a party of policemen was on patrol duty in the No. 63 Beach Area, Corentyne, Berbice, when they received information of a robbery.
The ranks were informed by Sid Angel 27, a clothes and chicken vendor of No. 53 Village, Corentyne, that she and Frank Johnson, 38, a taxi driver and rice famer of Lot 58 Community Zone, Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, were robbed by two identifiable males armed with long guns.
The bandits robbed them of three cellular phones one pair of earrings and $60,000. The patrol requested back up which quickly arrived from the No. 51 Police Station and headed for the No.63 Beach.
Upon arrival, the police were greeted by gunfire. The cops took cover and returned fire hitting one of the bandits to the head. That man was subsequently identified by the two victims as one of the bandits who had robbed them earlier.
A 12 gauge shotgun along with two live rounds and two empty casings were found next to the body of the bandit. The man’s body was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital Mortuary.
The man’s relatives expressed total surprise at the man’s behavior. He was never known to be involved in such activities.
His sister, Kim Cort, stated that around 18:00 hrs, they were at home when they received several calls informing them of what happened. She said that the family subsequently travelled to the area, where she recognized the body. He had a bullet wound in his head.
He was a porkknocker and had been home since April.
He is unmarried and has no children. He leaves to mourn three siblings and his parents.
The post mortem examination was conducted by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan at the Skeldon Hospital and revealed that he died from shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot injuries.
Investigations are continuing as the police hunt the other bandit.
