Stages week long activities
The village of Sandvoort, West Canje, has its fair share of history. It was one of the early villages bought by slaves just after the abolition of slavery in 1834. The Orange Chapel Congregational Church was founded by Rev. John Wray in 1813 and is the third oldest Congregational Church in Guyana.
It was in the village of Sandvoort that the slave named America received 100 lashes whilst she was pregnant. She survived the lashes and lived until she was 80 years. Her daughter received 170 lashes whilst she was also pregnant. She however did not survive her dose of barbarism.
After that second string of ill treatment Reverent Wray returned to England to press his case for the Abolition of Slavery.
The Orange Chapel Congregational Church culture group participated in the first ever Carifesta celebrations which were held in Guyana in 1972 and again in 2008.
The Villagers look forward to Emancipation celebrations each year and atrocities like the beatings are etched in their collective memories.
A week of activities which began yesterday will mark the celebrations. The celebrations were graced with the presence of President David Granger.
Today, the activities continue with an interfaith service.
On Monday a campfire and storytelling night will be held and a day of sports is slated for Tuesday at the Sandvoort playfield.
Youths in the Sandvoort area will have a chance to compete in a spelling B competition while outstanding villagers will be recognized.
The history of Sandvoort will be revealed at a special session on Thursday called ‘Know Your Roots’.
A fitness walk and medical outreach is planned for Friday. An oldies dance is slated for Saturday.
The week of activities is expected to culminate on Sunday with a cultural extravaganza and exhibition.
The main event will be held at the Village playfield with a formal programme of cultural activities and a stage show. The day’s programme will also include African drumming, folk songs, dancing, skits, poems and storytelling.
The usual African foods including the Cook Up, Metem Gee and other delicacies including Quenches, Conkie and Cassava Pone.
