Team include four players with WI experience
By Sean Devers
Runners-up Guyana will battle North Windwards at National Cricket Centre in Couva when the Regional Women’s Super50 Tournament opens on Thursday in Trinidad and the Guyanese are scheduled to depart for the Twin Island Republic early Monday morning.
Last year, for the first time in eight years, Guyana reached the final but the Jamaicans captured their fifth title by crushing the Guyanese girls by 218 runs at the Windsor Park in Dominica.
Guyana ended ahead of Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Lucia and Dominica in that order and Coach of the team, former Guyana First Class left-hander Andre Percival, is quietly confident of improving on last year’s performances.
The 2015 format will see six teams playing. Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago as well as composite sides pooling the talent of the North Windward Islands of Dominica and St. Lucia, and the South Windward Islands of Grenada and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
Each of the teams will play the other once in a round-robin competition, featuring five rounds with the two teams accumulating the most points qualifying for the Final to determine the winner on Sunday, August 16, at the National Cricket Centre.
Percival disclosed that his aim is to improve on last year’s performance, adding that winning is also important.
“We have four players in our team who has played for the West Indies before and two who are new to Regional level and if we play to our full ability we should be very competitive,” said Percival, who played 31 First-Class games for Guyana between 1992 and 2005.
“Our strength should be our all-rounders and pace attack. We have a quality fast bowling attack led by Subrena Munroe, Captain Tremayne Smartt and left-arm quickie Erva Giddings, who all played for the West Indies,” Percival, who has seven First-Class fifties with a highest score of 96, disclosed.
The Berbician, who also led the West Indies U-19s, feels that Shamaine Campbelle, the other West Indies player in the team, should play a key role with the bat.
Percival admitted that former Windies batter June Olge, who missed the Inter-County tournament due to personal reasons, is one of the best openers in the West Indies and will be dearly missed.
The two new comers are Mandy Mangru and Sheneta Grimmond while two wicketkeepers have been selected in Rashuna Toossaint and Melanie Henry.
Off-spinner Phaffiana Millington should enjoy the Trinidad tracks while many of the players in the side, including Campbell who bowls leg-spin, can provide decent spin options. The team ended a one-week camp on Thursday when they had their final net practice session at Providence.
The tournament will be used to pick the West Indies team to face Pakistan from October 10 to November 2 in St. Lucia and Grenada.
Guyana squad: Tremayne Smartt (captain), Erva Giddings, Subrena Munroe, Melanie Henry, Shamaine Campbelle, Katana Mentore, Mandy Mangru, Haseena Mohamed, Kavita Yadram, Akaze Thompson, Rashuna Toossaint, Heema Singh, Sheneta Grimmond, Phaffiana Millington, Carol Nurse (Manager) Andre Percival (Coach) .
