Former Minister of Health under the PPP administration, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran yesterday appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Whim Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of use of insulting language.
The court heard that on Monday 20th April, 2015, whilst outside the Whim Magistrate’ Court, Ramsaran used insulting language towards Women’s Rights Activist, Sherlina Nageer.
Ramsaran pleaded not guilty.
His lawyer, Adrian Anamayah, stated that his client is 55 years old and lives at Lot 141 Block B Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara. He said that Ramsaran is single and is a medical doctor. He is a former Minister of Health. The attorney said that it was his client’s first appearance in court for a matter of such nature.
Anamayah said that his client is well known and was only told by the police the day before that he had to be in court, and was present. He asked that his client be placed on his own recognizance.
The Virtual Complainant, Sherlina Nageer, was not present in court when her name was called.
Stand-in prosecutor Sergeant Welch had no objection for bail when the matter was put to him.
Ramsaran was then released on his own recognizance (self-bail).
He is scheduled to return to the Whim Magistrate’s Court on September 21.
The lawyer also hinted that his client will be exploring all possibilities of filing cross against Ms Nageer. He made an application for the statements filed in the matter to be made available to the defence.
The lawyer also asked the magistrate to warn the media that photographs should not be taken of his client in court.
The former Health Minister sat quietly in the front row of the court for about 45 minutes before his matter was called. After the conclusion of proceedings, he was escorted to sign the recognizance form.
Ramsaran had no noticeable following, with two persons accompanying him to court.
In a comment to the media, his lawyer said that his client is innocent of the charge and will be vindicated. He said that the charge is politically motivated and is an effort to embarrass Ramsaran.
The controversial former Health Minister has been embroiled in a number of matters over the years
