Government has started its decentralization services for passport issuance and renewals.
The rollout will begin in Berbice from next Monday at Springlands Immigration Office.
The announcement will spell good news for Berbicians who reside between Number 43 Village and Moleson Creek, Corentyne, who would otherwise have to travel to the city to collect their passports.
Many of them leave home early in the morning, only to be greeted by long lines at the Immigration Office on Camp Road.
The initiative was one announced by the David Granger-led administration as part of the measures to bring services to the people.
According to the police, persons can collect their passports between 08:00hrs and 16:00hrs, Monday to Friday.
The new Government had created an entirely new ministry – the Ministry of Citizenship, headed by Winston Felix, to deal with passports.
Other outlying areas, especially in the hinterland, are to be targeted, including Lethem, Region Nine.
Currently, persons have to travel and overnight in the city to visit the Immigration Office.
