The Alliance for Change is in a state of grief over the loss of an industrious party stalwart, a fine mind and certainly one of God’s children who genuinely cared about others. Our Executive Member, Denise Davidson-Walcott departed this life on Saturday 18th July following a brief illness. To say that she will be sorely missed is an understatement of gigantic proportions.
She has left indelible footprints not only in the corridors of the AFC, but at the Communications Concept publishing company where she toiled for close to 19 years, as well as at the Charlestown Secondary School where she functioned as Head of the Business Department up to the time of her demise.
A passionate educator is what she was. She carried with her, throughout the years before and after attaining her post-grad certificate in Education, a deep love for children and the conviction that the school environment must be the springboard from which they could launch themselves into their own futures.
Most people have described Denise as quiet and courteous. Those who knew her more intimately speak about her deep love for the Almighty God and the quality of her life that was spent in His service. That quietness was very likely the crux of her strength and one reason why she was so well liked. As highly qualified as she was, Denise preferred to deliver support services and she delivered it well. She also held Bachelor’s degrees in Marketing and Management.
“You have been a true warrior for a better Guyana and your efforts were not in vain. We salute you and will be forever indebted to you for your outstanding contributions.”
This was but one of the multitude of tributes to our departed friend written by her ‘Brother’ in the AFC. Another compatriot described her as industrious and as dependable as the upcoming dawn, qualities that saw her promoted to the Executive of the party a few short years after she joined in 2006. After the 2011 General and Regional Elections, she became a Counsellor in the Regional Democratic Council for Region 4. Much to our dismay and deep regret, she fell ill earlier this year and we lost her a week ago.
The AFC will host a special event in her memory this evening (Sunday 26th July) at the AFC’s headquarters, Railway Embankment, Kitty, from 6.00 pm. Her home-going service will take place the following day at the New Covenant Ministry’s Cathedral near the Sandy Funeral Home, Chapel St., Lodge, Georgetown.
Words will not suffice for this loss, but the AFC takes this opportunity to offer our most profound sympathy to her family, friends, sisters and brothers in Christ. We hope that you all take some comfort in the knowledge that in the AFC you have many a helping hand at your disposal.
REMEMBERING THE LINDEN MARTYRS
Today we also commemorate the third anniversary of the Linden Massacre, the shooting to death on 18th July, 2012, of three men, and infliction of grievous injuries to the faces and bodies of 20 Lindeners by pellets and bullets. This loathsome incident occurred during a completely legitimate protest over the previous government’s precipitous decision to hike electricity charges without warning or consultation. We salute the courage of Shemroy Bouyea of Silvertown, Allen Lewis of Wismar Hill, and Ron Somerset of Wisroc, who lost their lives that day.
These men and the majority of the injured were teenagers and youths still in their 20’s who had/have long, progressive lives ahead of them. The AFC mourns the fact that the three deceased did not live to see this new era come to pass. They did not live to witness their long held dream come to pass, the dream that their government would be people-oriented and would serve the nation through consultation with its citizens, by taking their ideas and turning them into working solutions for business and educational ventures to blossom.
The APNU+AFC Coalition government has just completed its first two (2) months at the wheel of this ship of state. So while it caulks the hundreds of leaks (a continuous process) and adjusts the forward compass for our socio-economic development, we are simultaneously working in communities in all ten regions to assess the people’s individual and collective needs.
Recently the Coalition government announced that the terms of the agreement which the previous government had signed with the local government of Linden following the 2012 protest and deaths of three citizens, will soon be honoured.
High on this list of commitments is the return of the television satellite dish to its original owners, the people of Linden, who had received it as a gift in the 1980’s from an expatriate company, Green Construction. Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said recently, “It is our intention to ensure that all of the commitments given by the Government under that agreement (will be) met … and the matter (of the hike in electricity rates) brought to a speedy conclusion.” He also spoke about the additional terms of the signed agreement which relate more broadly to improvements in the livelihoods of residents in all the communities that make up Region Ten including Ituni, Kwakwani, Coomacka and Wisroc.
These too will be attended to in the short to medium term.
