– Queen Street, Sparta Boss, Showstoppers also progress
Sparta Boss, Queen Street of Tiger Bay, Showstoppers and Samaroo Dam were among the teams registering victories when the inaugural Second Ground Entertainment ‘Ballers in the Summer’ knockout Street Football Competition opened Friday night, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.
The tournament dubbed ‘West versus East’ and played in rainy overcast conditions which failed to stop a large outpouring of fans, they got an early taste of what was in store when Agricola scored a major upset after squeezing past one of the tournament’s favourites West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ by a 2-1 margin.
That matchup was followed by North Ruimveldt having an easy passage to the next round courtesy of a walkover from Uitvlugt.
Showstoppers eased past Raiders by a 2-0 score line with Dexroy Adams opening the scoring in the third minute when he fired into the net from the left side after receiving a pass from Nathan Allicock.
Three minutes later Adams sealed his brace through a stinging right-footer down the centre of goal.
Former Georgetown champions Queen Street of Tiger Bay rebounded from a one goal deficit to eliminate Patentia Street Ballers 4-1. Mark Mohan had given Patentia Street Ballers the lead in the ninth minute, firing past the last stop after a pass from the right side.
However, Solomon Austin netted two minutes later, sliding in a pass down the centre of the net, following a two-on-one situation. Austin returned five minutes later to give Queen Street the lead, finishing into the left side of the goal.
Darren Harris then made it 3-1 one minute later when he delivered a firm shot into the goal, before Alpha Fletchman sealed the win with a strike of his own in the 20th minute.
The most impressive victory of the night belonged to current national champions Sparta Boss who demolished Den Amstel by a 7-0 margin thanks to pairs from Dennis Edwards in the first and 11th minute, Sheldon Shepherd in the 14th and 15th minutes and new recruit Deon Alfred in the 14th and 15th minutes. Gregory Richardson was the other player to enter the scoresheet for Sparta Boss.
Samaroo Dam knocked out DeKinderen 3-0. Winston Johnson netted in the fifth and ninth minutes, while Algernon Scott completed their tally with a goal in the 20th minute of play.
West Side Ballers survived 2-1 in sudden death penalty kicks over Parfaite Harmonie after regulation time failed to separate a 1-1 tie, while Admiral United defeated Brothers United 1-0, compliments of a Quason McAuley 17th minute strike.
The semi-finals of the tournament was set for last evening, while the final and third place playoffs will be played this evening, at the same venue.
The winning team will receive $200,000 and a trophy and the sponsors of the event are Golf Motor Oil and A. Forrester Lumberyard among others.
