Opener Shimron Hetmyer stroked an unbeaten century to guide defending champions Guyana to a six-wicket victory over Leeward Islands when the Regional U19 50-over tournament continued yesterday in Jamaica.
Chasing 217, Guyana reached their target for the loss of four wickets, ending on 220-4 in 35.1 overs. Hetmyer and Tevin Imlach added 64 for the opening stand to give their team a solid start before Imlach was dismissed for seven. Guyana then lost Balchan Baldeo (07) and Keemo Paul (08) to be at 115-3, but Hetmyer and skipper Travis Persaud steadied the chase as they shared in a fourth wicket stand of 82 with sensible batting. Persaud faced 40 balls and hit three fours and one six before he went for 27 with the score on 197. However Hetmyer anchored the innings, smashing 18 fours and four sixes to remain unbeaten on 134 off 114 balls. Mrinal Wadhwa claimed 2-32.
Earlier, Jaeel Clarke slammed 60 (5×4,3×6) and Kacey Carthy made 48 (5×4,1×6) to boost Leewards batting before they were bowled out in 46.2 overs. Baldeo, Akshaya Persaud and Kassim Khan picked up three wickets each, while Paul snared 1-24.
