With all the uncertainties over the clash of dates and other modalities now been settled, all systems are in place as the country’s leading cyclists are expected to journey to East Canje, Berbice today for one of the biggest race on the cycling calendar so far.
The event is the second annual Grenville Felix Memorial 60-mile road race. This is the fourth year that a cycling race will be held in his honour, but the second time as a memorial event. The race will peddle off at 14:00 hrs from the late engineer’s former residence, Canefield East Canje and proceed to Number 43 Village Corentyne before returning to its place of origin.
The event is sponsored by the Felix family; most of who are overseas, in memory of the once outstanding Guyanese to commemorate his birthday and is opened to cyclists countrywide and is being organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC).
Felix passed away on January 5th and would have celebrated his 98th birthday on July 16th.
The event will see the first six finishers receiving prizes. Prizes will also be awarded to the first three juniors and first three females and the first three veterans open. A total of 10 sprint point prizes will also be awarded.
The Grenville Felix Memorial Trophy is a lien trophy and will be given to the first person who gets their name on it three times.
The event was first held in honour of Felix Birthday and was for Berbice cyclists only. Andrew Hicks rode away with the first edition with Neil Reece etching his name on the winner’s board on the second occasion. The defending champion is Mario King. (Samuel Whyte)
