Berbice High School (BHS) are through to the Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) final of the Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition which continued yesterday, at the Skeldon Community Centre ground.
Playing in their semi-final fixture against Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC), BHS rallied from behind to register a hard fought 4-3 victory and will now await the winner of the Orealla versus Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) clash today, at Burnham Park in New Amsterdam.
BHS took the lead in the third minute of play when Shemar Arrindell tapped in from close range following a corner that was taken from the left side that resulted in a partial save from the opposing goalkeeper.
However, that early ascendancy was nullified six minutes later when PMTC’s talisman Jamal Butts took full advantage of a similar mistake by BHS custodian Prince Laurindo following a free kick just outside the 18-yard box to lash home for the equalizer.
That positive result saw Butts oozing with confidence and his speed and silky skills was beginning to bother the BHS backline and in the 17th minute he once again proved to be their chief rival when he took an audacious shot from about 35 metres out to beat Laurindo on the far post to send their band of supporters into celebratory frenzy.
Once again however, Arrindell was there to rescue his team when he raced on to a pass from centre-field, dribbled past two defenders, before swiveling and hitting a powerful shot low past the surprised goalkeeper in the 21st minute to level the proceedings.
The game would turn on its head when Rawle Bourne gave BHS the lead for a second time after beating the goalkeeper to his right with a fierce shot from close range. Butts tried desperately to lift his team on his shoulders, but the strategy employed by BHS begun to frustrate him and he failed to make any significant impact henceforth.
However, Paul Williams scored off a corner which was taken by Butts after 42 minutes to keep the contest deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the break. On the resumption, both teams came close to scoring as they looked for the go ahead goal and it would be BHS through Tozu Aaron, who sprinted on to a ball that was booted forward by one of his teammates and instead of PMTC goalkeeper Oswald McEwan collecting the ball with his hands he chose to clear with his feet and only succeeded in watching it slice off his feet for Aaron o run on and poke into the back of the net in the 57th minute.
That proved to be the decisive goal as no more goals were scored before the final whistle sounded to hand BHS a well deserved win and a place in the final set for Sunday.
