Bishop’s High School upset Final Four bound St. Rose’s High for a consolation win yesterday in the Under-14 category of the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF), currently underway at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Bishop’s won their first game in the category 37-35 with Roydon Glasgow scoring 11 points and Stefon Hamilton eight points. St. Roses High and Linden’s Mackenzie High School have reached the U-14 semi-finals of the 2015 Championships.
St. Rose’s forwards, Kwesi Roberts and Anthony Yansen scored 12 and 10 points respectively as Yansen also racked up seven rebounds. St. Rose’s went down 13-17 at the halftime break, which was owed to a rejuvenated team effort from Bishop’s High.
Still down, this time 13-26 in the second half, Roberts and Yansen combined for 10 points in one minute to pull St. Roses to within three points, 23-26. Jeremiah Spencer continued St. Rose’s run when he hauled them to within one without Bishop’s scoring. The two teams exchanged points before Roberts finished a put-back to give St. Rose’s their first lead of the game, 31-30. However, Glasgow returned the lead to Bishop’s following a three-point jumper that jilted the momentum of the opposition.
Yansen finished a lay-up to equalise at 35 inside a minute to play, but Glasgow again carried his team on his shoulders with a lay-up from the paint. The effort resulted in two points that became the final score line in the game.
St. Roses had beaten Marian Academy 25-15 Wednesday night with Yansen top scoring with six points and Corey Graham leading Marian with five points. The loss yesterday for St. Rose’s was only their second in the U-14 competition.
Meanwhile, in the U-16 duel, Marian blew out Queen’s College 69-18 on Wednesday night with Jonathan Mangra recording a double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. Jahleel Young and Joshua Brazao scoring 16 points each with 17 and 13 rebounds respectively. Omari Joseph had 16 points for Queen’s College.
Kwakwani Secondary beat Tutorial High School 39-35 and Bishop’s overcame New Amsterdam Multilateral School 46-30 also in the Under-16 category Wednesday night. The Final Four in the U-14, U-16 and U-19 groups will be played tomorrow night.
