Mackenzie High School and Marian Academy opened their 2015 National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) Under-14 campaign with huge wins yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall that are likely to set the two teams on a collision course.
Mackenzie High surprisingly dismissed any challenge from Kwakwani Secondary School with a 53-12 victory. Yonnick Tappin scored 17 points while Isaiah Adams and Kareem Roberts scored eight points each for Mackenzie High.
Isaiah Hintzen was the leading scorer for the defending champions, Kwakwani with six points and 10 rebounds.
Marian escaped a run from Bishop’s High School to eventually win 37-19 in another U-14 clash yesterday. Josiah Daniels scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Corey Graham had six points and 11 rebounds and Kellon Dundas six points.
For Bishop’s High, Royston Glasgow scored seven points as both Shemar Greaves and Timothy Richmond added four points.
The pint-sized guard, Ethan Fernandes drilled a huge three-point jumper to give Marian the early lead 13-3, following a fast-break layup from Graham. Bishop’s, however, went on a 6-2 run that helped them close out the first half down 9-15 at the break.
Cruising comfortably at 19-9, a jumper from Greaves initiated yet another run before Richmond entertained the small but vocal crowd with a lethal crossover and floater in the lane. He made it a four-point game when he scored again from the baseline.
Bishop’s continued on an 8-0 run that brought them to within two (17-19) with 11 minutes left to play in regulation time. It was, however, the last hoorah from Bishop’s as Graham led his team in another fast-break to give Marian a 10-point lead.
Marian finished the game on an 18-2 run as Bishop’s struggle to finish easy attempts contributed to a meltdown in the closing minutes.
Earlier in the day, Kwakwani girls thrashed New Amsterdam Multilateral School 52-2; Kenesha Leacock scored 18 points, while Jenna DaSilva added 12 points. Jenelle Belle had six points. The lone scorer for Multi was Annalesa Barker.
On Sunday, Kwakwani had beaten Marian Academy 28-8 with Leacock pouring in 13 points and three rebounds with four steals. Jada Mohan had three points for Marian.
In the U-19 category of the male competition on Sunday, St. Roses High School won against the Wismar/Christianburg Secondary School 35-22. Nathan Saul scored 12 points as Anfernee Jervis added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Daniel Lee and Akinni Wilson scored six points apiece for Wismar/Christianburg Secondary.
J.C Chandersingh Secondary defeated Mackenzie High School 41-37 with Osafo Profit scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Anthony had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Mackenzie High with Tyrese Mitchell putting up 12 points.
New Amsterdam Multi gained a walkover Plaisance Secondary School in the U-16 competition Sunday night.
