The Eccles Industrial road which stands as the main access road to Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill (HBSL) is presently in a “deplorable state” which puts tremendous strains on vehicles entering and leaving the area, according to BK International.
The contract for building the road was signed under the previous Government with H. Nauth and Sons Civil Engineering dated back in May of 2009. The funding for this was part of the $US18M loan agreement the former administration made with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Presently, the access road is in need of repairs which the construction giant BK International pointed in a media-op recently. The question of the state of the road was raised when the Minister made statements against the current state of the BHSL upsetting the contractors of the site.
“What the Minister should look at is the road entering into BHSL, he should question the state of the road,” Brian Tiwarie, Director of BK Intl said.
According to Head of the Solid waste Management Project, Gordon Gilkes, the road was designed by the consultants to last about 15 years with maintenance. He added that the road was constructed on a navigation dam for cane harvesters with intentions of taking traffic to and from HBSL.
The current state of the road has raised tremendous concerns because of its frequent use. Trucks are often stuck in the large pot holes. Residents of nearby communities also raised some concerns due to the fact that vehicles have begun to use their streets to get to the landfill.
BK International stated that in recent times the garbage accumulation has drastically increased since the recent clean up campaigns are ongoing around the country, leaving more vehicles to manoeuvre the very risky roadway with their loads.
The company also noted that they are not responsible for the state of the road and that the road is “worse than it has even been but the Minister failed to address this issue”.
It is the belief of the company that the road didn’t last one year and they (the contractors of the road) are left to walk freely without being surcharged.
