The turnout was somewhat disappointing but the small group of attendees seems set to employ every effort to have scrabble as a part of the school curriculum.
They formed a part of activities organized by top seeds, Carlton Murray and his wife, Yvonne, whose mission is to train teachers and students in the intricacies of the game and eventually have in installed in the system.
The sessions were scheduled for the Caramel Secondary School, Charlestown, but the full accompaniment of participants did not attend as expected. As such, the coordinators held informal discussions with those present while expounding on the technicalities of the sport.
Several schools had signaled an intention to be a part of the exercise including President’s College, Caramel Secondary, Charlestown Secondary, North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary, St Roses High School, Annandale Secondary, Enterprise Secondary and Buxton Secondary.
However, only a few turned up including St Roses High School, Caramel Secondary School and as far as Enterprise Secondary ECD. The group engaged in more than three hours of intense discussions and at the end, the decision was to meet again soon in order to employ strategies towards the effective commencement of the programme.
Ms Murray delivered a pep talk to the participants while giving a brief outline of her plans. She expressed disappointment in the poor turnout but said that she is optimistic of improvement in attendance. Mr. Murray also gave a brief preview of the origins of the sport locally and traced the journey to those days when it was just a handful of participants that demonstrated an interest. Mr. Murray has been the backbone of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) and even sponsored a yearly tournament. He has also pledged full support to the initiative. The attendees have all shown deep interest and vowed to persevere towards the eventual installation of the sport in their respective schools.
Ms Murray indicated that the boards are expected to arrive from the United Kingdom shortly and she will aspire to place at least two of them in each school. The attendees were treated to snacks donated by Kaieteur News journalist, Franklyn Wilson and Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board and Director of the West Indies Cricket Board, Anand Sanassie, while Kaieteur News journalists, Michael Benjamin and Rawle Welch, were instrumental in the planning phase.
