The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) says it is upbeat following a meeting last week with the new administration.
According to Patrick Yarde, President of the union, the largest negotiation body for public servants, the recent meeting was to make known to President David Granger that the union stands ready to work alongside the new Government.
“We are encouraged… we are dealing in a more credible relationship and while it is a little early, we want to move beyond promises.”
GPSU, under the previous administrations of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) have been complaining of being sidelined.
Over a consecutive number of years, the Government had unilaterally announced annual increases for public servants, in total disregard for the collective bargaining agreements in place.
There were delays in raising key allowances.
The union had also been complaining about the increasing number of contract employees in Government’s employ which has severely eroded its membership.
GPSU had been a harsh critic of consecutive PPP/C governments.
“The fundamental thing is that we feel comfortable dealing with a Government that we can and one we can engage in discussions…meaningful discussions.”
Present with Granger at the meeting for the Government, at the Ministry of the Presidency last week, were Minister of State, Joseph Harmon; Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin; Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally; and Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence.
President Granger had promised that revamping the entire public service, rebuilding confidence, and working with the unions were among the top priorities for the administration.
