Back to back defending champion of the senior race John Charles will be hard pressed to return to the top podium spot when the annual Baker’s Memorial Cycling Classic featuring the best riders in the land comes off today in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden and the Linden Soesdyke Highway.
Today’s event which will cater for senior, junior, juvenile, veteran and female riders is organised by the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club (LBFCC) and has at stake over $400,000 in cash for the taking, sponsored by the Guyana Sports Development Foundation (GSDF) of the USA and the Baker’s siblings who also reside in the USA.
The race is held in memory of the late Baker parents, Joseph and Adelaide of Linden. Three of their siblings were former cyclists, Brentnol, Lindon and Colin who would have won various national titles during the 1970s and 80s. Lindon and Brentnol went on to represent Guyana and Colin was so inclined but in his time according to him, “It was difficult to get a tire much more leave the country.”
Recently crowned National Champion Hamza Eastman, who placed second last year, will be one to watch today as will the inform Orville Hinds who won yesterday’s feature 35-lap school boys and invitational contest at the National Park in the Malta Supreme sponsored 11-race meet.
Other riders in contention today are the USA based duo of Pro Rider Gerom Williams and Scott Savory along with Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud, Jamal John, Akeem Wilkinson, Alanzo Ambrose, Stephano Husbands and the Linden based Michael Anthony, Silvio Inniss, Akeem Arthur, Shaquelle Agard.
Race time is set for 08:00hrs when the respective categories will pedal off from the Baker’s residence.
The seniors and juniors will pedal all the way to Long Creek on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before returning to the starting line for the finish while the juveniles, veterans and females will battle all the way to Kairuni Creek and back.
Meanwhile, ever since the inception of the race some four years ago, the GSDF in association with the Baker’s family has provided the LBFCC with training DVDs, a Racing Cycle and parts as part of its plan to assist in the development of cycling in Linden and eventually, all of Guyana.
According to Colin Baker, plans will be made to identify persons desirous of becoming coaches and they will provide local and overseas training for such individuals.
The race was originally scheduled to be part of a criterium event around Mackenzie as part of the Linden River Front Festival but due to the cancellation of the event as a result of the inclement weather, it was decided to use today’s format.
