New Amsterdam Multilateral Titans won the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) 2015 Berbice Conference title yesterday afternoon at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with a plethora of ‘big men’ on their roster putting on a show in the paint.
NA Multi easily beat J.C Jandersingh 42-27 in the first of four regional conference finals of the NSBF. Sherland Gillis scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Multi. Michael King and Leroy Lashley had nine points apiece for the opposition.
The other three conference finals were played last night; Plaisance Secondary played President’s College for the East Coast title, Kwakwani Secondary took on Linden’s Technical Institute in the Big 10 finale and St. Roses played Marian Academy for the City title. The opening final yesterday had a slow offensive start with both teams managing just nine points in 12 minutes. However, NA Multi went on a 9-0 run with their ‘big men’ attacking the basket in the paint. King managed J.C Chandersingh only points in eight minutes to close out the period in the form of a three-pointer with a minute before the break.
NA Multi led 20 -12 at halftime. Ramone Fogenay led a fast-break along with the 6’ 3″ forward, Neil Wills to continue the school’s haste toward victory in the second half; however, down 28-12 King led J.C Chandersingh on a 13-4 run.
The spurt prompted Multi’s Coach, Willon Cameron to return his starting line-up to the floor in an effort to stem the steady flow of points. The move worked as J.C Chandersingh managed just two points in the last 10 minutes of the game to seal their fate.
Meanwhile, to commemorate its 10th Anniversary, Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), the host of the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF), will for the first time today organise a Media Day at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 12pm.
The programme for the Media Day includes the awarding of teams from those finals last night as well as a photo opportunity with teams. Coaches, leading players and Managers of schools will engage the media on their participation in the 2015 tournament. (Edison Jefford)
