Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) took the opportunity to defeat nemesis Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) to take top spot and win the 18th annual Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey memorial Inter school U15 football competition which was played recently for schools in the New Amsterdam/ Canje area.
In the competition which was played at the All Saints Scot Church Ground, six schools participated namely Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS), Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Canje Secondary School (CSS) and New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS).
In the final it was BEI’s time to rejoice with a 2-0 win over VESS. Scoring for BEI were Akel King and Halle Charles.
In semifinal play BEI edged past Berbice High School (BHS) 3-2 in a high scoring encounter. For BEI Dwayne Allen netted a hat-trick, while BHS got their goals of the boots of Mustapha Nicholson and Edron Stephen.
In the second semifinal VESS defeated CSS 3-0 with Rickford Williams scoring 2 and Trevon Logan one, being on target.
In the presentation ceremony which followed immediately after the final, BEI was presentation with the winning trophy and 15 gold medals. Second Place VESS received a trophy and 15 Silver medals.
In the individual category Best Goalkeeper award went to Melroy Joseph of VESS. The most goals prize was won by Dwayne Allen of BEI. The most valuable player awad went to Arion Kendall of BEI.
The tournament was organized by the Humphrey family and coordinated by former national player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey.
The Late ‘Beef’ Humphrey was an ardent sports fan with several of his children representing Berbice at football and other sports. Some are still actively involved in promoting the further development of the sport in the county.
