City Magistrate Ann McLennan denied a man his pre-trial liberty yesterday after he was accused of swindling in excess of $100M from Nazar Mohamed, proprietor of Mohamed’s Enterprise.
Particulars of the charge alleged that between June 22 and June 23, at Bartica, Eron Ferrier being entrusted with the sum of $120M to purchase gold, converted same to his own use and benefit.
He was remanded to prison until July 3.
Attorney, Latchmie Rahamat, prosecuted the matter by means of fiat. Rahamat was given permission from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to conduct legal proceedings against the defendant.
She said that Mohamed gave the money to Ferrier to purchase gold. She added that when the man (Mohamed) went to the defendant to uplift the articles, he received nothing.
The matter was reported and the defendant was arrested and charged.
Rahamat pointed out that the defendant did something similar to someone else, while adding that bail be denied. She argued that the man is a flight risk. Latchmie also requested that bail be opposed citing the seriousness and penalty attached to the offence.
However, Ferrier’s Attorney, Patrice Henry requested for his client to be granted bail. He said that his client poses no flight risk. The Attorney contended that the prosecution has no evidence to prove that the money was given to his client.
This matter will be called again at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
