Teenager Sachia Vickery, who is born to Guyanese parents, playing out of the United States, was
beaten in the first round of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, England yesterday.
Vickery lost 6-2, 6-4 to 8th seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova in their encounter. The teenager has been described as one to watch and has been improving immensely. She has won several junior tournaments in the US and is rated among the top junior players there.
Vickery had qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon after beating Puerto Rico’s Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the final game of the qualifying tournament to book her spot among the big guns. The draw placed her against Makarova.
Vickery beat Nigina Abduraimova of Uzbekistan 6-0, 6-1 and Sorana Cirstea Romania 6-7(5-7), 6-3, 6-4 en-route to the clash with Pegula in the final qualifier.
