Team Coco’s Hamza Eastman has cemented himself as one of the best riders of this generation when he made it a double at the highest level, capturing the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) National Road Race Senior crown yesterday in torrential rain and heavy winds.
The multi talented athlete clocked 3 Hours 42 Minutes 37.67 Seconds to be crowned National Road Race Champion following up on his Time Trial win on Saturday. In an exciting sprint home to the line from among the six riders that had established a lead on the pack, Eastman outdueled another sprint sensation in Alonzo Greaves and last year’s champion, Geron Williams in that order.
UK based rider, Claire Fraser-Green was again unstoppable as she once again carted off the double like Eastman. Fraser-Green won the Female Championship from Marica Dick (Flying Ace) and Toshawana Doris in One Hour 02.34 Seconds.
Brighton John (United Cycle Club) won the gold medal in the Juvenile race, clocking One Hour 02.23 Seconds. Copping silver was Kemo Logan (Trojan Cycle Club – Berbice) while the bronze medal went to David Sampson.
The Under-45 gold medalist was Team Coco’s Junior Niles who clocked Two Hours 13.06 Seconds. Silver and bronze went to Goldfrey Pollydore (Carlton Wheelers CC) and Warren McKay, respectively.
Ruling the roost in the Over-45 class was Talim Shaw, his Two Hours 13.04 Seconds was enough to earn him gold ahead of Kennard Lovell (Flying Stars CC) and Shameer Baksh (Carlton Wheelers CC), silver and bronze medals winners.
Romello Crawford (Trojan CC) of Berbice rode beautifully to capture the gold medal, inking his name in the record books as the best junior of 2015. Team Coco’s Jamal John had to settle for the silver while Kemuel Moses of Alanis CC took the bronze.
The feature race was a grueling contest with the riders having to contend with the elements from above which belted down, complimented by heavy winds from the Atlantic Ocean. The lead changed from time to time but no one rider was able to establish any threatening lead.
Eastman tucked in and was patient in the leading which also include Greaves, Williams, Orville Hinds, Michael Anthony, Paul De Nobrega and Scott Savory. Such was the devastating effect of the rain and winds that GCF President Horace Burrowes took a decision to reduce the amount of laps from 13 by one to safeguard the riders. Some said that the winds were so heavy that in some instances that it shifted them involuntarily to other parts of the course.
There were also pools of water at certain points on the East Coast Highway that was dangerous for the riders.
At the presentation ceremony, Burrowes thanked all the riders and officials for making the event a success. He also expressed gratitude to the Traffic Ranks of the Guyana Police Force for the work done in making the event accident free.
The race pedaled off from the Ocean View International Hotel, East Coast Demerara, proceeded to Celina’s Resort (Kitty), continued all the way to Sparendaam then to he starting line to complete one lap.
