Tonight all roads lead to the Providence Stadium where the Guyana Amazon Warriors face-off with a Leon Johnson led Guyana Rest Team in a CPL practice match from 18:00hrs under lights.
All eyes will be on discarded 40 –year-old Test player Shiv Chanderpaul, off-spinner Sunil Narine and 40-year-old Brad Hodge tonight, while Lendl Simmons will also be in action in the T20 affair.
Tonight’s encounter is the first of two practice matches for the Warriors while the second practice game is set for tomorrow at the same venue from 16:00hrs before the Warriors depart on Wednesday for Barbados where they will play the opening game of 2015 CPL t20 tournament against defending Champions Barbados on Saturday.
Chanderpaul will want to prove that age is just a number and that he was missed by the West Indies team in Dominica and Jamaica, while Narine will be keen to show he lost none of his magic without his illegal deliveries.
Hodge, who made his Test debut against the West Indies in Australia in 2005, also played the last of his six Tests against the Caribbean side in Jamaica in 2008 and is the only ‘overseas’ International here in Guyana and like West Indies reject Assad Fudadin, will play tonight.
Umar Akmal and David Wiese, who will replace Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thisara Perera along with South African Marchant de Lange who will replace Lasith Malinga who has pulled out of the entire tournament, will meet the team in Barbados as will Skipper Denish Ramdin. Dilshan and Thisara will only play the first four games before heading back for the Pakistan/Sri Lanka ODIs.
In addition to Chanderpaul, Simmons, Fudadin, Hodge and Narine, local fans can get the opportunity to see West Indies t20 all-rounder Chris Barnwell, opener Trevon Griffith, ‘A’ team pacer Ronsford Beaton and medium pacer Paul Wintz in action this evening.
Also in the Warriors side are West Indies under-19 opener Shemron Hetymer and his Guyana under-19 team mates Ashkai Persaud, Sherfaine Rutherford and Canadian under-19 player Satsimramjit Dhindsa. The spin pair of Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul who were members of the West Indies team that lost the two-Test series after the second Test ended on the fourth morning yesterday in Jamaica, are scheduled to return home but will not play in the practice games in Guyana.
Johnson, who has two fifties in four Tests but was not selected for the England or Australia series after playing in South Africa is the only Test player in the Guyana Rest team tonight but 2010 Guyana t20 star Jonathon Foo, Robin Bacchus, Vishaul Singh, former West Indies under-19 and CCC skipper Steven Jacobs, former West Indies ODI player Royston Crandon will all be on show.
National Keeper Anthony Bramble who had the most dismissals in the Regional session, spinners Raj Nanan, Steven Sankar and Ricardo Adams along with left-arm pacers Andre Stoll, Raun Johnson and right are quickie Keon Joseph completes the Rest Combination. Admission is free.
