– Colts burst through Nets on way to redemption
By Edison Jefford
Ravens Under-23 team moved a game closer to the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the Hard Court’ title Saturday night when they set up an ideal final showdown with Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters.
The battle for the junior title in the competition was scheduled for last night, but rain inundated the Georgetown venue, forcing the GABA to postpone the game. The Ravens junior team set up the clash with a 63-43 dismantling of Colts Basketball Club.
Sebastian Luke scored 17 while Carlos Edwards had 12 points; the other players scoring double figures for Ravens were Triston Burnette and Rondell Arthur with 11 and 10 points respectively. The win ensured that Ravens, like Pacesetters, remain unbeaten.
Jonathan Pooran was the only player in double figures for Colts with 14 points as Amoniki John and Jafar Gibbons contributed six and five points apiece. Colts’ redemption came in the Division I category of the tournament when they blew out Republic Bank Nets.
Colts beat Nets 81-55 with centre Shane Webster seemingly returning to form in the nick of time ahead of the Caribbean Championships. Webster was dominant in the paint for 32 points with the guard duo, Shelroy Thomas and Dave Causway adding 18 and 10 points respectively.
For Nets, Mortimer Williams scored 16 points while Pelham Doris and Mark Gilberts scored 14 and 10 points each. Colts obliterated Nets in the first quarter with an 18-4 run, which put them up 28-12 at the end of the period, ensuring Nets play from behind.
Colts took full advantage of their home-court through Webster, Thomas and Causway. Republic Bank Nets had a better offensive second period, but it was not enough, as Colts managed to hold on to a 49-30 lead midway through the game.
It was clear after Colts amassed the mammoth first quarter lead that they knew once they kept on scoring, the game would be out of reach for Nets. Colts won each quarter to do exactly that with a 20-point 65-45 lead at the end of the penultimate period.
Nets were unable to string together a run throughout the encounter which ensured the redemption of Colts after Ravens had blew them out in Plaisance. The full strength Colts had a point to prove and they did so in fine style against a top Georgetown team.
In the other Division I game, University of Guyana (UG) Trojans defeated the East Coast-based, Melanie Patriots 75-61. Emmanuel Archibald scored 25 points with Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai scoring 23 points and Colwick Benjamin adding 11 points.
For Melanie, Sherlan Legall led the offence with 19 points while Sheldon Noel and Floyd Arthur supported with 11 and 10 points correspondingly. The GABA will announce the new date for the continuation of the competition, which should be in its twilight.
