Knights continued their ascendancy in basketball in Georgetown Wednesday night with an easy win against West Side Warriors in the Division I category of Georgetown’s Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the
Hard Court’ Championship.
Guard/forward, Owan Walton was again the leading offensive player for Knights with 19 points, which led them to a 59-41 rout of Warriors in overcast conditions. Lloyd Bart had 11 points and Akil Lewis eighth points for Knights in their third straight victory.
Devon Murray scored 21 points for Warriors. Continuing the game from last week when a power failure eclipsed its first attempt with Knights leading 32-21 with two minutes left before the half-time break, three points were added to Knights to close out the period.
Knights, obviously reserved owed to the damp court, obliterated Warriors for a mammoth 51-32 lead at the end of the penultimate period. Walton was the main contributor with a jump shot and a layup complimenting his excellent free-throw shooting.
The central Georgetown-based Knights went deep into their bench in the final quarter, after they had basically wrapped up the win with excellent clock management that placed the game beyond Warriors reach despite Murray’s scoring heroics. The game was over.
In an Opening Under-23 fixture, Plaisance Guardians thrashed Pepsi Sonics 93-69 with Terrence Daniels scoring 27 points and Akeem Johnson 21 points. Malcolm Powder and Andrew Johnson scored 10 and nine respectively for Guardians as well.
Daniel Haynes was the leading scorer for Sonics with 17 points while Quincy Wright supported with 16 points. Lumel Grant and Leron Vyphuis chipped in with 12 and eight points respectively for the Mandela Avenue-based Pepsi Sonics.
Guardians took possession of the game early, racing to a 31-19 lead. They continued to press an uptempo offensive system that ensured a 48-32 lead midway through the game. Sonics made an optimistic run in the third quarter that saw them chopping Guardians’ lead.
Sonics trailed 55-63 with a quarter left in the game. However, Sonics could not put together one quarter of complete basketball that would have seen them continue the run they started after their halftime break. They allowed Guardians to protect their advantage.
The tournament is scheduled to continue tonight at the Burnham Basketball Court having already seen games at the National Gymnasium and Plaisance Community Court.
