The file containing details of allegations against Tessouro mining company, which is accused of sending gunmen on a rampage through a mining camp, has been lodged with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), as the police try to ascertain whether the rival mining company is criminally liable.
According to reports, the file was submitted to the DPP yesterday afternoon at approximately 15:00hrs. The allegations are that on May 10, the Figueria camp at Konawaruk, District H45 was invaded by shotgun toting men dressed as Tessouro security guards.
The men then proceeded to spray the camp with shotgun pellets, all the while declaring that they had been sent to destroy the camp.
During their rampage, the Figuerias are claiming over $60M in damages occurred, in addition to their excavator operator, Ray Murray, being shot at the back of the head.
The attack which was partially caught on tape was reported to have left the workers traumatized. Kaieteur News understands that since the incident all the original workers have vacated the camp, forcing the couple to get new workers.
The attack is alleged to have been orchestrated by Tessouro Mining Company, a rival mining concern on whose land the Figuerias were prospecting, in a bid to get the latter to vacate the claim.
According to the couple, they were allowed to prospect on the land until rumours of the land’s economical value caused Tessouro to become envious and encroach on the land.
They were subsequently granted an injunction from the Chief Justice Ian Chang barring Tessouro from making any encroachment on the land until May 18, when the case pertaining to the land was scheduled to be heard in the High Court.
When the matter was called in the High court, the Figuerias were granted a work continuance order until June 3, the next scheduled court date, with Tessouro being given 14 days to respond.
Meanwhile, the guards in question were invited to the Mahdia police station, but were subsequently released on their own recognizance.
This has left the couple seething, since the video evidence of the attack, showing the security guards armed with shotguns threatening camp owner Mario Figueria, was submitted to the Police.
The Figueras, who were once the owners of Wonderland Tours, are having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that the attack has left their livelihood in tatters.
