Mayor Hamilton Green has lauded the efforts of those who organized and participated in the recent clean- up exercise around the city.
Speaking at the Statutory meeting of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC), held on
Monday, Mayor Green noted that the volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the city is cleared of garbage and was in excellent condition for the Independence Day celebrations.
During brief remarks, the chief citizen noted that the sanitation exercise signaled the dawn of a new era. He said that it is the first step in the restoration and preservation of Georgetown.
The Mayor called on all municipal workers to replicate the zeal displayed in the volunteers as they work to restore the city to its former glory.
The Mayor expressed gratitude to corporate bodies and private citizens which assisted in this regard.
Green made specific mention of BK International’s work in clearing the canals, drains and restoring the Independence Arch, as he extended an invitation for continued partnership between the municipality and other corporate entities for similar endeavors in the future.
In anticipation of Guyana’s 49th Independence Anniversary celebration, Guyanese worked assiduously to ensure that various sections of Georgetown were cleared of refuse and beautified.
BK International donated the services of its transportation trucks, while civilians donated whatever time they could to the clean up initiative.
From downtown Georgetown to Upper Brickdam, civilians, members of corporate Guyana and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), armed with rakes, trucks, gloves and garbage bags, could be seen in parts of Main Street, Water Street, Merriman’s Mall and the Square of the Revolution volunteering their time in cleaning activities.
Along the New Vendors Mall on Water Street, civilians and stallholders took it upon themselves to give the shopping strip a face lift.
The city -wide clean up exercise followed close on the heels of the installment of newly elected President, David Granger who was instrumental, in ensuring that works were being carried out smoothly.
