Businessman Intiaz Yakub, the owner of the Swiss Guest House and General Store on the Upper Corentyne, is now counting his losses after two bandits who had earlier checked into the hotel as guests robbed him of over $2M. The robbery was captured on CCTV camera.
According to the businessman the men checked into the hotel earlier in the morning. He stated that it was around 12:30 hrs, while he was in the hotel compound doing some chores that he was approached by one of the men, who was armed with a gun. The bandit, using expletives, ushered him into the business sector of the hotel which houses the store and the cashier cage.
There he was met by the other bandit who had a bag. The thieves still using a set of expletives, ordered him to lie on the floor.
The bandits then rummaged through the cashier cage and took out $1.9M he had one side, and another $60,000 which he also had stashed in the cage.
The man said that the $1.9M was to pay off his debt while the $60,000 had belonged to a Masjid.
The businessman stated that prior to the attack, one of the suspects who is an ex-cop had booked into the hotel with a female. Upon checking his surveillance camera he noticed that the ex-cop had earlier been in conversation with one of the thieves.
The businessman stated that the police response was good, but that they were hampered by the absence of a vehicle.
The businessman is calling on other business persons to unite and aid in crime fighting. “We need to stop this for all of our benefits,” he said.
He is offering a reward to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
Investigations are continuing and according to the police, one man who is a prime suspect is in custody.
