The Fyrish Black Sharks held their nerves to edge past the more seasoned Smythfield Rockers basket club 63-62 when play continued in the NPG Inter Club Basketball competitions for teams in Berbice.
The game which was played on Sunday at the Fyrish Basketball Court was intense from the start with the lead changing hands constantly.
It was the Smythfield Rockers that took the early lead to end the first quarter at 16-11. The second quarter saw the game picking up pace with both teams scoring constantly. However the Rockers were able to maintain their lead at 28-25 at the half way stage.
The Black Shark dwelling in familiar territory fought back nicely to take the lead 50-48 at the end of another keenly contested session at the end of the third quarter.
It was a see saw affair in the final segment as both teams played desperately for the win. However it was the Black Sharks that steadied themselves and moved away.
The main contributors for the Black Sharks were Keenan Williams and Linden Joseph with 14 points each, while Joel Fraser contributed 10 and Royel Franklyn had 8.
Leading the fight for Smythfield Rockers was Sherman Braithwaite with 17 with support from Tyron Dey 16 and Shimroy McKenzie with 8. With the win the Black Sharks have advance to the semifinals.
The competition continues on Sunday with New Amsterdam Warriors hosting Ithaca Hardliners at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball Court, in New Amsterdam, Berbice. Both teams are winless so far. (Samuel Whyte)
