On a day that was blessed with brilliant weather for cricket and thousands of fans
in attendance, Berbice, sponsored by Peter Lewis, defeated arch rivals Demerara by six wickets in the feature game of the event which was contested under lights. The May Day Cup Fund Raiser was organized by the Professional Friends of the PPP/C and was played at the historic Albion Sports Club.
Batting first after winning the toss, Demerara never gave themselves a fighting chance and were bowled out for 85 in 19.5 overs. Man-of-the-Match Joemal LaFleur proved the difference on a turning pitch. He led the charge with 5-9 off his four overs, while Jonathan Foo and Gudakesh Motie weighed in with one wicket apiece.
Openers Brian Sattaur (42) and Imran Hassan (21) added 49 for the first wicket, but no other Demerara batsman managed double figures. Former Guyana and West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan made three. However, he was welcomed by the fans.
In reply, Berbice lost West Indies youth opener Shemron Hetymer (0) off the second ball but national wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble (37) and Kandasammy Surujnarine (19) put on 50 for the second wicket to lead Berbice to the commanding victory.
Kevin Ramdeen and Foo contributed 16 runs apiece as Berbice reached 87-4 in 11.1 overs.
In the preliminary matches, New Amsterdam/Canje beat Upper Corentyne by 39 runs; Lower Corentyne defeated West Berbice by 32 runs and in the final, New Amsterdam/Canje lost to Lower Corentyne by seven wickets.
At the presentation ceremony, Anthony Ameerally, chairman of the organising committee thanked the sponsors and fans for their support and promised that the event will be an annual one. He also thanked Guysuco for making the ground available.
Honorable Minister of Finance, Dr Ashni Singh thanked the fans for coming out in such numbers and promised that this government will continue to work hard for the further development. He made special mention of the partners of the PPP/C and thanked them for their support.
