Dear Editor,
President Ramotar and a whole PPP entourage visited Mabaruma on Tuesday last week. The PPP hosted a rally at Kumaka. It seemed that Mr. Ramotar just had the DJ put in the Cassette of his usual speech while he lip synced.
What he and the various speakers did not see were the empty gazes of the people who they had coerced into attending the rally. They were promised gifts, monetary and otherwise, and were tired of waiting. They had no interest in the speeches because they recognised that they were being fed microwaved promises from 1992 that have not been fulfilled to date and are now tasteless. No new Steamer service, but the President said the North West would get a new boat with modern amenities (I wonder if this means that there would be a runway to accommodate aeroplanes). He rambled on and even threw a verbal punch at the Coalition’s billboard. It angered him.
However, whilst the rally was held just about 100 yards from the waterfront , which has not been completed to date after years in limbo, the caring President and his running mate did not take the time to walk around that area. This was the second time the President visited and did not even glance in the direction of the waterfront that his government is failing to complete. However, he did commission toilet facilities at the unfinished tarmac. It seems too that the toilets project is not yet complete, since members of Ramotar’s party and others used the back of the facility to relieve themselves. Worst yet, is the cost of this toilets project. It is to die for.
Then there was the usual problem with food for the poor people who they forced to come out to make up numbers. Some shopkeepers at Kumaka had to rescue them with snacks.
This Government can be likened to an abusive husband who promises his spouse that he would change and as soon as she gets comfortable, he again abuses her in mega ways.
This cruel Government walks in and shares out pittances to the hapless Amerindians every five years and even threatens them that should they vote for the Coalition, the soldiers would come into their communities and rape and kill them. How could they look at those innocent faces and fool them like that over and over? How could they literally force these people to vote for them while they starve their schools of teachers, while the parents are starved of good paying jobs and some of the kids do not have the basics to attend school? Are these people human? How could the Amerindian man get on a PPP platform to bellow on about the goodness of the PPP when evidence is there that he could do with a makeover of his mouth and the Minister of Amerindian Affairs had hers done for 2.1mil? How? I now believe in obeah.
Which caring Government goes to a community and threatens the residents that should they vote for the other party contesting the elections, they would take away their houses? Then to compound it, they draft and get them to write up a banner saying that no APNU/AFC people are welcome in the village. What the people are scared to tell them is that the houses were built by funding from Food for the Poor. Similarly, they campaign on facilities which have been placed in Communities by the Red Cross. Why are they so scared of the people hearing the truth and making decisions for themselves? If their track record was so good, there would be no need to put villagers on lock down. If they had appointed a Trained Teacher for the school in Barima/Koriabo and set up a Nursery Section in the Primary School at Imbotero among other little fixes, people would have recognised that the PPP Government ‘cares’ about them. The PPP is banking on the Amerindians because among many others, the sugar workers shunned them at the May Day Rally. Most of the Amerindians are standing up to them, but they manage to keep some in political bondage.
