United States Charge D’Affaires, Bryan Hunte, recently spent the entire day in Berbice
joining with executives of the Food for the Poor Guyana (FFP) INC and the St. Francis Community Developers (SFCD) to assist a number of agencies and organizations with much needed supplies. The Charge D’Affaires was visiting on an invitation of Coordinator of FFP Berbice branch and founder and CEO of the SFCD, Alex Foster. Also spending the entire day on the trip were Chief Executive Officer of FFP, Kent Vincent; Programme Manager of FFP, Andrea Benjamin and Commander of Police ‘B’ Division Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph.
The group toured several rural areas including Mara, Lightown, Plegt Anker and Highbury. The team was also scheduled to visit New Forest to follow up on programmes already started with the residents there.
Hunte and team then journeyed to the SFCD Headquarters at Portuguese to meet with the main delegation to collect their promised assistance. Those areas received a quantity of agricultural tools including land tillers, water pumps, forks, spades, shovels, cutlasses among other equipment.
They also visited Black Bush Polder and the SFCD Head Officer at Port Mourant. A model farm was commissioned by the Lower Corentyne Secondary School on the lawns of the SFCD.
A number of schools which are part of a joint pilot project in the region received agricultural equipment for their model farms and to assist the students in the CSEC examination and general agricultural drive.
The New Amsterdam Prison also received a minibus load of items including food stuff and body cleansing materials.
During the exercise some residents whose houses were burnt received household equipment to help them get back on their feet. Also some 18 bicycles and more than 126 pairs of long boots were distributed. Before leaving the sprawling St. Francis Community Developers complex the team undertook an extensive tour of the compound.
Speaking at the ceremony Charge D’Affaires Hunte, commended all those responsible and who were involved in the success of the various projects. He expressed his delight and pleasure with what he saw. He was happy to know that the FFP INC which garners most of its support from the USA was an integral part of the various projects.
He said that as long as there is success in the ventures the US government will always be willing to assist in whatever way possible.
Kent Vincent, CEO of FFP, was also happy that the various programmes had shown tremendous success. “FFP is not only about food, but about helping people where there are needs.”
He thanked Charge D’Affaires Bryan Hunte, the President, Government and people of the USA for their tangible and more than worthy assistance.
He urged those present to assist the FFP so that they could continue to receive help.
Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph pledged police support in the various ventures. The activities will definitely keep persons occupied and off the streets.
He stated that the police are also involved in a number of community activities and will be willing to be a part of the ongoing ventures at anytime.
