Two dozen employees of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) were yesterday conferred with badges of occupational safety and health as Guyana gears up to observe World Day of Occupational Safety and
Health (OSH).
During a simple ceremony at GPHC’s Resource Centre, 24 members of a joint OSH Committee were urged to maintain their mandate of keeping the health and safety of workers at the hospital on the forefront.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GPHC Michael Khan in brief remarks said that the management of the hospital recognised the importance of having a functional OSH committee. He said too, that the management has several roles in maintaining the protection of workers.
However, he noted that issues which plagued the administration cannot be dealt with by the management alone and would require the help of the committee. He added that the committee ensures that processes are safe and without risk to the health of all workers.
He admitted that previous reports had shown that dangers posed had been due to carelessness. With a committee, workers are consulted, informed and trained in all aspects, Khan said.
“I look forward to the many proposals from that group of workers to implement what they’ve learnt,” Khan said. He continued, “I implore you, as OSH representatives, to actively participate in the implementation of prevention and control measures that will ensure the workers to work in a safe environment.”
The CEO also expressed hope that a strong relationship will be forged between the management and the committee. “Safety begins with teamwork so let us work together as a team to join in building a culture of prevention for OSH.”
The Joint Safety and Health Committee provides the platform for communication, coordination and cooperation between workers and their representatives and their employers to ensure that working conditions are safe and that workers enjoy optimal physical and mental health.
At GPHC, the committee comprises of 24 different representatives from different departments.
The hospital will also be participating in a planned series of activities in Guyana to observe the OSH World Day. These activities commenced on Thursday with the participation of the 5 committee members in training sessions. The training focused on building capacity and strengthening efforts for OSH.
The goal will be to have all of the representatives trained in OSH.
