A 73-year-old Richmond Housing Scheme pensioner has been recorded as Essequibo’s latest suicide. Fitzroy Augustus Oriley Grant, a Berbician, died Friday morning moments after his relatives rushed him to the Suddie Public Hospital.
He shared a common-law relationship with Waltereen Baird.
Relating what she was told by one of her daughters-in-law, Baird said that shortly after sunrise yesterday, she heard screams emanating from her lower flat as her daughter-in-law called for her. “Wallo! Wallo! Come! Come!”
Mrs. Baird said that as she ventured downstairs she noticed that something about Grant wasn’t right. His appearance had changed.”He look like he was far gone”. She said she then proceeded to question Grant what had happened and he told her that he drank poison.
Baird noted that after learning about what Grant had done, she called out to her neighbors and they hurriedly transported Grant to the Suddie Public Hospital. Grant however died moments later.
Baird said that Grant, who is originally from Berbice, was living on the Essequibo Coast for a lengthy period. He worked at the former Guyana Rice Development Board, now currently the Caricom Rice Mills Ltd.
He was described as a good gardener and hard worker. Grant fathered no children.
In another recent suicide incident, minibus driver, 37-year-old Devanand Satytoo, formerly of Affiance died last week after he consumed one litre of poison.
Constable Leono Patrick, formerly of Anna Regina new Housing Scheme died early this month after consuming poison. He reportedly had domestic problems.
Reports are that a 17-year-old Suddie resident has consumed a quantity of poison and is hospitalized at the Suddie Public Hospital.
The Essequibo Coast continues to register a high incidence of suicide cases.
