A man was yesterday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a larceny from the person charge.
Devon McCurdy, 30, admitted that on April 22, at Regent Street, he stole one gold chain from Ronald Baptiste, valued $126,000.
Police Corporal Sean Gonsalves told the court that Baptiste was sitting in a bus at the Plaisance Bus Park, when the defendant entered the bus and snatched the chain from his neck. He said that the victim chased the defendant, who was eventually caught. The defendant was positively identified by the victim, as the person who robbed him. Gonsalves said at no time during the chase was the accused out of the victim’s sight.
Subsequently, investigations were carried out and McCurdy was arrested and charged.
McCurdy explained to the court that it was a case of mistaken identity. He said that he thought Baptiste was the son of a man who owes him money. He recalled that he and the victim had a scuffle. However, he pointed out that it was until he reached the police outpost that he realized that it was the wrong individual.
The prosecutor also indicated that the chain was never recovered.
McCurdy has since offered to monetarily compensate Baptiste for the chain and he accepted.
This matter will be called again today.
