Hours after businessman Abdul Quadir Nazir was shot and his car taken away by armed men Wednesday night, police yesterday found the vehicle, a BMW, at Nismes, West Bank Demerara.
In a statement, police said that the 26-year-old Canal Number One Polder resident was in his car in front of his residence along with mechanic Mark Crandon, 40, when a car drove up and a man exited. This occurred around 20:20 hrs on Wednesday.
According to the police, the man, who was armed with a firearm, discharged rounds at Nazir, hitting him to his left shoulder.
The businessman was thrown out of his vehicle and the armed man along with an accomplice drove away with Nazir’s car. As the men sped away from the scene, the mechanic who was still in the vehicle managed to jump out and run for shelter.
The police were notified and the businessman was rushed to the hospital where he remains a patient.
It is still unclear what the motive of the shooting was, but police are reportedly treating it as an attempt to kidnap Nazir.
When this newspaper visited the businessman’s home yesterday, no one was at there.
One neighbour said that he was in his house when he heard gunshots.
“When I run out, people bin done gone with he (Nazir) to the hospital… I hear a car with four men pull up and started to shoot. Two men then come out and jump in Nazir car, while the other two remained in their car and then they drive away,” the neighbour stated.
Up to press time, the businessman was in the hospital’s recovery room after undergoing surgery.
Investigations are ongoing.
