Police in Berbice are on the hunt for two bandits who yesterday robbed the People’s Pawn Shop at New Street, New Amsterdam, and the two female attendants, of over $8M in cash, jewelry and cell phones.
According to information, the two attendants Valencia Saunders and Marsha D’Andrade were in the pawn shop around 13:45 hrs when the two men entered the premises and initially gave the impression that they were interested in doing business. One of the men then lifted up his shirt and whipped out a gun. The two women were then dragged to the back of the building where they were ordered to open two safes from which the bandits emptied all their contents.
While one of the bandits was unmasked, the other wore a stocking over his face.
The pawn shop which has been in existence for about two years is owned by Winston and Samantha Saunders.
The two attendants’ hands, feet and mouths were bound with duct tape.
The bandits then calmly walked out of the establishment. The ordeal lasted about five minutes.
After they left, the women waited about five minutes before attempting to free themselves, since they were not sure if the bandits had left the premises. The women eventually managed to do so before coming out in front and raising an alarm.
The men reportedly left on bicycles. Information revealed that the unmasked bandits had earlier gone to the pawn shop to make enquiries.
The police were informed and responded promptly, but by the time they arrived the bandits were already gone.
The bandits escaped with $5.3M in gold and diamond jewelry along with $2.2M cash.
D’Andrade was relieved of one gold chain valued at $200,000; two gold and diamond earrings, valued at $250,000 along with one Samsung cellular phone, valued $200,000.
Saunders was relieved of eight gold bangles valued at $200,000 and a BlackBerry cellular phone valued at $80,000.
The cops also removed CCTV surveillance cameras from which they hoped to get more details of the robbery.
No one has been arrested so far.
