When Emily Dodson took on the case of asking the court to rule that the two-term limitation on the presidency was unconstitutional, it came as an intensive and extensive shock to me. Ms. Dodson and I were freshmen contemporaries at UG. She was a die-hard PNC and I don’t think she changed much.
If Emily Dodson changed since our UG days countless moons ago, it would probably be in support of any other political party, but not the PPP. Ms Dodson is one of the lawyers for the application to remove the constitutional restriction that limited Jagdeo to two terms only. I still cannot believe it; that Emily Dodson is a lawyer in a case, the decision of which will favour Jagdeo?
So why did she do it? One top-class attorney told me that he heard that the fees for the lawyers were so stupendous, the offer could not be turned down. I hope Ms. Dodson doesn’t waste her time replying to this because it is my right to reject the explanation someone offers me and I will not accept any explanation that the case is being done freely.
Before we move off the court matter, it should be noted that the PPP or Jagdeo or both showed some skillful subterfuge. They chose three African-Guyanese lawyers all of whom had some connection to anti-PPP parties or African rights organizations. So why Dodson took the case and obviously threw away the political associations she had?
Let’s move to Urling. Except for my friend, Barrington Braithwaite, all others who spoke to me about Urling said they were surprised at his embrace of the PPP. He came across as a member of the next generation that wants to break free from the ethnic monster that has devoured this country since the split between Jagan and Burnham in the fifties.
One would have thought that since that sad and brutal Chronicle editorial in July 2012 whose racist contents, we have never seen before, not even during the sixties, people as young as Urling would have turned their backs on any organization that tolerates such racist bestiality. In fact, President Ramotar, as the Minister of Information, refused to condemn the editorial.
Just to remind readers; the editorial argued that the socialization of African youths have nurtured an anti-Indian instinct in them that is sadistically driven. It posits that African youths are violently prone to hurt Indians so they rob and kill Indians. This was inflammatory and dirty stuff that Ramotar and the rest of the PPP refused to condemn.
So why did a young, educated man like Clinton Urling, (whom I taught at UG and saw as a future leader) choose the PPP?
Let’s move to Elisabeth Harper. Harper spent over three decades in the public service at the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Prior to her entry into the PPP kingdom, she was virtually unscathed. She hardly did or said anything that would have rattled the opposition or the nation.
In those decades of experience, she would have been able to see the difference in the professionalism of Hoyte’s presidency and the PPP’s crass, decadent, nasty behaviour in office.
Finally, there is Clive Jagan, who was politically close to his cousin, Joey Jagan. I am absolutely sure, not even ninety nine percent, but a hundred percent sure, that he and Joey founded a political party in 2010. I hope that Joey Jagan has the decency to acknowledge this, because I know it is true. Clive Jagan is now a PPP candidate
Why did Urling, Dodson, Harper and Jagan join a political party whose moral and ethical credentials must be one of the worst balance sheets in the world? The answer lies in the way they perceive the Guyanese reality.
Many die-hard PNCites (like Clinton Williams who was a PNC fanatic as a UG student) have concluded that the days of the PNC will never return; the East Indians will never break with the PPP; the PPP will always win national elections, the PPP will always be in power; the Guyanese society has resigned itself to Jagdeoite domination and this will be the reality in Guyana for a very long time.
Of course they did not come to that conclusion without serious analysis. They looked at the way the PPP subjugated the security forces, humiliated public servants, de-activated the opposition and crippled the Guyanese society. They concluded that this will be the state of affairs for a long time to come.
If they are going to expand their income and ambition, then only one avenue is available – the PPP. These four persons will get a rude awakening after May 12, 2015.
Where is the BETTER MANAGEMENT/RENEGOTIATION OF THE OIL CONTRACTS you promised Jagdeo?
