Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry released a man on $100,000 bail yesterday after he pleaded not
guilty to assaulting his girlfriend with a beer bottle.
Nigel Payne, 31, of Durban Street Wortmanville, denied the allegation which stated that on April 20, at Kingston, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Trevisha Van De Cruize.
Police Corporal, Bharrat Mangru told the court that the victim and the accused share a relationship. He said that on the day in question the victim was ‘hanging’ on the seawall with her friends when Payne approached her and told her that he was ready to go home.
However, Mangru said that the woman indicated to the man that she was not ready to leave. The defendant who was under the influence of alcohol broke a beer bottle and cut the woman to the left side of her face.
She was subsequently taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for medical attention and later reported the matter.
Investigations were carried out and the defendant was arrested and charged.
Mangru had no objections to Payne being released on bail but asked that it be granted in a substantial amount.
The matter was adjourned until May 8.
