Early yesterday morning, 31-year-old Harriram Chaitoo left his 66 Phase 1 Hope,
East Coast Demerara home, for his first day on a job as a welder, with Rawle “Valez” Arjune’s trucking service. His relatives had no idea that it would be his last day alive.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that at approximately 10:45 hours yesterday, Chaitoo’s skulled was crushed by an eight-tonne bed loader, while he was operating on it with a welding torch at the trucking service’s lot 101 Unity, Mahaica location.
Chaitoo’s body was pinned under the heavy load for about 15 minutes before his fellow workmates used an excavator with a chain to lift the weight. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and was pronounced dead just before noon.
When this newspaper arrived at the hospital, Chaitoo’s workmates could be seen waiting for the dead man’s relatives to arrive.
At that time, the men explained that they did not know who Chaitoo was, since they had not yet been acquainted with him.
“We jus’ come with he inside the pickup…We can’t tell you what happen cause we ain’t went around when the thing happen. All we know is that he was doing his own work and the thing (bed loader) fell on him. We don’t even know his name.”
Eventually, word of the incident got to Chaitoo’s family and they promptly arrived at GPHC to inquire about his condition. When medical practitioners confirmed that he was dead, the man’s wife, burst into tears. She then recalled the final moments she had with her husband.
Relatives were too overcome with grief to speak to the media. Investigations into the incident are on-going.
