An eighteen year-old man was brought before the court yesterday after he was charged with larceny from the person.
An unrepresented Dominique Morris of Lot 35, NonPariel, East Coast Demerara, denied the allegation which stated that on April 16, at Regent Street, he stole one Samsung Galaxy S4 cellular phone from Melanie Deen valued at $100,000.
Police Prosecutor, Seon Blackman told the court that Deen was walking in the vicinity of the East Coast car park and was using her cell phone when the defendant approached her and snatched it and “ran up the road.” An alarm was raised by the young woman and public spirited citizens apprehended the defendant. The cell phone was later found in the accused man’s pocket.
When given a chance to relate her side of the story Deen told the court that she was talking to her mother on the phone when the defendant approached her and snatched it. She added that the man ran away and she followed behind him hollering, “thief thief”. She stated that after persons heard her screams, they ran behind the man and caught him with the phone in his right pocket.
However, Morris claimed that it was a policeman who stole the phone and pushed it in his (the defendant’s) pocket, whilst walking besides him.
Bail was objected to by the Prosecutor citing the nature, prevalence and penalty attached to the offence if the defendant is to be convicted.
Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty considered the defendant to be a flight risk and remanded him to prison.
The matter was adjourned until May 6.
