Eighteen-year old Jamila Sanmoogan of Dolphin Speed Swim Club will depart Guyana this weekend for Colombia where she will begin a three-year scholarship at the University of Sports in Cali.
This was made possible through the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) in collaboration with the Colombian Swimming Association.
Sanmoogan will undertake Spanish lessons and commence her swimming course under one of Colombia’s leading coaches Fabo Toro on Monday before pursuing a degree in Physiotherapy.
Speaking at a ceremony held at Herdmonston Lodge Thursday night, president of GASA Ivan Persaud congratulated the athlete and wished her well. He expressed confidence that she will excel and urged her to remain strong. Persaud stated that it is important for parents to support their children in sports adding that success comes after hard work.
“We do not have a high performance centre here so we have to send out swimmers overseas for them to achieve a higher level,” he added.
He urged fellow executive members to work feverishly for the development of the sport. “We have the talent, but we have to prepare our swimmers at home for these opportunities,” he said.
Vice President of the GASA Elke Rodrigues said her achievement will serve to motivate the young swimmers, while Jamila’s mother Debra Sanmoogan expressed confidence her daughter will do her country proud.
Jamila said that she is excited and promised to work feverishly to make Guyana happy. She thanked the GASA and the Guyana Olympic Association for their generous support.
Also present at the ceremony were Leon Smith, Coach Sean Baksh, Leon Seaton, Loren Mahaica of GASA.
Sanmoogan was part of the Guyana Carifta games team which recently returned from Barbados.
