NPG B’ball off to bumpy start …
The inaugural NPG Packaging first division Basketball competition got off to a not too enterprising start with Rose Hall Jammers of Corentyne gaining a walkover from Hopetown Stealers in their scheduled first round game which was slated for the Rose Hall Town Basketball Court.
The tournament which is organised by sports enthusiast Vibert Garrett has attracted seven teams who will be placed in two groups with the top two in each group advancing to the semifinals set for June 14th and 21st. The respective winners will clash in the final on June 28th. Prizes are at stake for the top teams and outstanding individual players.
Group A teams are Rose Hall Jammers of Corentyne, Hope Town Stealers of West Berbice and Canje Knights of East Canje while Group B is made up of New Amsterdam Warriors and Smythfield Rockers of New Amsterdam, Fyrish Black Sharks of Corentyne and Ithica Hardliners of West Berbice.
The tournament is expected to continue on Sunday with New Amsterdam Warriors taking on archrivals Smythfield Rockers at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball Court.
Meanwhile, President of The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds has promised to assist Berbicians in lifting the standard of the game. Hinds made the commitment on Sunday last when he traveled to Berbice to witness the opening game of the competition which unfortunately did not come off.
Hinds met with Coordinator Vibert Garrett at the Area ‘H’ Basketball Court and held healthy discussions on promoting the sport in the Ancient County. The dormancy of The Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) which was resuscitated in early 2014 was also discussed.
Hinds promised to assist the association in organizing clinics and coaching sessions for officials including scoring and refereeing among other aspects. (Samuel Whyte)
