An elderly man appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on a drug trafficking charge.
Sixty eight year-old Arthur Manget of Old Road, Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara was remanded to prison, after denying he had 9.670 kg of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri.
According to the facts, the defendant was at the airport when his suitcase was placed through a scanner. Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks observed a strange object in the defendant’s luggage. A search was conducted and the illicit drug was found.
Field tests were carried out and the substance tested positive for cocaine.
The matter has been adjourned to April 30, where the defendant will appear before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
