Another person was yesterday brought before the court, after the police alleged that he falsely declared a large sum of money he was travelling with.
Rajesh Seeogobin, of 19 Public Road, Prospect, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on March 17, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, he had £32,000, in his possession but only declared £30,000 with an immigration officer.
The defendant’s attorney Glenn Hanoman informed the court that investigations were carried out at the airport. He affirmed that his client had no reason to make a false declaration, since he declared £30,000 at the airport.
The lawyer continued, “I don’t think he should even be charged. The other £2,000 belongs to his wife,” the attorney stated. Counsel requested that his client be released on reasonable bail since he is not a flight risk and is willing to go through with the trial.
However, the attorney expressed his dissatisfaction, because the money is still in the possession of the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU). He asked that the money be handed over to the defendant since he has business to conduct.
Police Corporal, Bharrat Mangru then told the court that he needs to seek advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as it relates to handing over the money to the man.
Nonetheless, bail was granted in the sum of $100,000. The defendant will return to court on April 23.
