A Communications Officer attached to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) was arrested last week in New York after authorities found cocaine in sneakers that he was carrying in his suitcase.
Thenga Adams, according to sworn statements of a Special Agent of the Homeland Security, arrived on April 7 on a Caribbean Airlines flight (number 524) via Trinidad and Tobago.
He was selected for a Customs and Border Protection examination.
Adams reportedly identified two suitcases which he said belonged to him.
During searches, officials found four pairs of unused sneakers in the two suitcases, which raised suspicions because of how light they were. Probes were inserted in the heels and a white powdery substance was found. Tests confirmed that it was cocaine that amounted to 786 grammes.
He was arrested and read his rights.
According to court documents, Adams in statements to law enforcement officers said that he knew the sneakers contained illegal drugs.
On April 8, he was taken before Judge Lois Bloom in the Eastern District Court of New York where he was refused bail.
Adams, until recently, was tasked with sending out statements on behalf of GuySuCo to the media.
