Given their efforts to alleviate unemployment among the youth in communities along their district, police officers of ‘D’ Division have found jobs for eighteen (18) young men living between Stewartville and Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, (WCD) under their social inclusion project, C-Pets.
C- Pets, which was launched last year, is the brainchild of “D” Division Commander, Ian Amsterdam.
The project is part of a strategic plan to encourage communities, faith-based organizations, police and residents to build closer relationships with each other, in an effort to reduce drugs and alcohol abuse among citizens, promote sports, culture, entertainment and youth empowerment.
The initiative is also a collaborative effort between faith-based organisations, government agencies, business organizations, as well as a number of Non Governmental Organizations, (NGOs) and stakeholders.
Given this linkage with the business community, the ‘D’ Division Police, under this project, have afforded youths in the district, opportunities for employment.
According to Deputy Commander of Police ‘D’ Division, Stephen Mansell, the programme caters for young persons, particularly men, between ages of 18-25 years.
Mansell explained that men would be attached to companies as trainees and at the end of six months, they have the opportunity of becoming permanent employees, once vacancies exist.
He said that to date, twenty-six (26) persons have gained employment under the initiative geared at getting youths off the streets and empowering them.
In this instance, the Deputy Commander explained that 18 youths have been employed by Kares Engineering, of Windsor Forest, WCD, where they will up to earn $40,000 monthly.
Today, Mansell is scheduled to engage a further 75 youths from Stewartville, Uitvlugt, Zeeburg, De Willem and Meten Meer Zorg with the aim of providing jobs.
Project C-Pets was launched on July 10, 2014, and has since been touted as one of the reasons for crime reduction in the region.
