Two persons, who were jointly charged for drug trafficking following the discovery of cocaine concealed in ceramic ornaments, were freed after the witnesses failed to show up for the trial.
The case against Belinda Williams, of Meadow Bank and Gordon Klass of Lot 7 Princes Street, Werk-en-Rust, was dismissed by Magistrate Fabayo Azore on Tuesday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after two witnesses continuously failed to be present at the trial.
Williams and Plass were accused of having in excess of two grams of cocaine on July 7, 2014 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, for the purpose of trafficking.
According to facts, Williams was at the airport posting cargo destined for Dublin, Ireland on Amerjet flight number F68120 when members the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) along with police ranks conducted field tests on the cargo which contained eighteen (18) pieces of ornaments. This exercise revealed the cocaine concealed in the ornaments.
The drug was subsequently weighed and amounted to 17.736 kilograms.
At the time of the bust, Williams was five months pregnant. When told of the offence, she admitted that the package was given to her by Klass. When ranks arrested Klass, he reportedly told them that someone had given him the boxes.
Both Plass and Williams were represented by Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry.
Klass was previously convicted in Barbados on a drug trafficking charge.
