Steve Bacchus amassed 10 points to take the top honours when the Guyana Draughts Association (GDA) staged a B Class tournament at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, on Sunday March 29. The tournament was very competitive and saw Michael Francis taking the second place slot one point adrift of the champion.
The third place had to be decided after the judges employed the tie break system to separate Esan Anderson and Rudolph Gentle after both players had finished on 6 points apiece. The former player eventually earned the nod. The overall winner, Bacchus, was promoted to the ‘A’ category following consecutive wins at this level.
Bacchus will now match skills with the bigger boys when the GDA hosts an ‘A’ tournament at the same venue this Sunday April 5. Further, the top 5 finishers in the just concluded tournament have also earned the right to compete in Sunday’s tournament. Trophies and other prizes have been donated by the National Sports Commission.
